Prof. Mantovani was born in Moncalieri (Turin) on 3rd January 1966. He has been a Salesian since 1986, and on 10 September 1994 was ordained as a priest. He gained a Doctoral degree in Ecclesiastic and Civil Philosophy from the Pontifical University of Salamanca, and in Italy has studied philosophy and theology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, at the Salesian Pontifical University (Rome and Turin), and at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas “Angelicum”, where he gained a Doctorate in Theology.
Prof. M. Mantovani is the Rector of the Salesian Pontifical University and Full Professor of Theoretical Philosophy II (Philosophy of the Transcendent Being) at the Faculty of Philosophy, of which he was first Secretary (from 1997 to 2006) and then Dean (from 2006 to 2012). In 2009 he was appointed Deputy Rector of the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS), and from 2012 to 2015 was Dean of the Faculty of Sciences of Social Communication. Since 2016 Prof. Mantovani is also the President of the Conference of Rectors of Roman Pontifical Universities and Institutions (CRUIPRO).
His main areas of research focus on philosophical theology, the philosophy of history and various topics on the borders between science, philosophy and theology, mainly investigating the history of Thomism and in particular the authors of the second Spanish scholastic.
He has been running the Project STOQ-UPS (Science, Theology and the Ontological Quest) since 2006 and has been an Ordinary Academician at the Pontifical Academy of Saint Thomas Aquinas since February 2010. He works with the University Pastoral Office of the Rome Vicariate on certain activities of the Cultural Centre “Paolo VI” of “Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza”, and is Vice President of the S.I.T.A. (International Thomas Aquinas Society).
